I know I told you shading was easy, but as with anything it requires a little practice. I'm going to tell you about the exercise that enabled me to "see" what I was drawing. Which in turn taught me, Shading is the difference between what is good and what is not when it comes to realism and for what is appealing to the eye.
I assume your in china, I dont know what the paper bag situation is there. But if can get about 6 of these. 6 plain paper bags.
If you do have those you could probably get away with anything that has fold or creases.
SO you have that... pick a place where you can observe inside for a few hours.
place your bags on top of each other randomly about 3 or 4 feet from the place where you will be drawing.
get a lamp, some kind of light that you can move around and place it about 1 foot from the bags.
turn off room lights if there are any
seat yourself and look at the bags.
look at the bags
see the shadows?
notice how the light effects where the darkness begins if you move the light around.
starts in different places doesn't it?
another thing to notice about the shadows.
Is that there is rarely ever just one shade. Ever. It graduates from the edge of black to light. all depending on how the light hits the subject.
Take your time and draw these bags. No rushing or anything. And it isn't supposed to look like them... The exercise is to teach you how to see shadows. where they start and where they end.
after spending an hour or so ... move the light to another position and draw that.
if you have trouble seeing shades or if it's a shadow or not. Squint your eyes... then the will show up nicely.
After done with this. Go to a public place and notice how the natural light or un-natural light creates shadows on everything you see. Shadows make it possible for you to see. If there were none, then everything would be white and we wouldn't be able to see anything.
I think you would be able to learn how to shade effectively if you go through this as I have before. And really, it did open my eyes to what shading is all about.
good luck with your shading ^^ ja
